2018 Review
Kick start your meal at this upscale Japanese café with a fancy cocktail. The cocktail selection is respectable, if somewhat unexpected. The whiskey-based Kyushu yuzu cocktail comes highly recommended, as does the Ama sake cocktail made with a healthy rice-yoghurt drink base. Pair the drinks with fresh sashimi or sushi such as the spicy aburi salmon roll. Crabmeat and avocado are enrobed in rice, blanketed with flame-kissed salmon and topped with spicy mayonnaise and salmon roe. Each morsel is a party of flavours and textures, at once creamy, crunchy and unctuous. The café specialises in traditional kamameshi, where flavoured Japanese short grain rice is steamed with various ingredients in an iron pot, and served with a simple stock made from chicken, bonito and kelp. The eel and beef kamameshi is extremely popular, while the hearty aburi kaisen chirashi kamamesh, topped with an assortment of lightly torched seafood, is deliciously satisfying too. Balance out the carbs with the house special salmon sashimi and avocado salad before digging into the grilled miso-marinated pork belly, or grilled cod marinated in sweet soy. For something indulgent, go for the foie gras millefeuille, with a thick slice of duck liver crowning buttery puff pastry. Finish on a sweet note with the ethereally light tofu cheesecake, or the kurogoma pudding, layered with black sesame paste and silky milk pudding. For a richer ending, order the tofu cheesecake parfait—vanilla ice cream on sponge cake and crowned with cornflakes, chunks of cheesecake, mochi balls, raspberries, strawberry syrup and fresh cream.
