For a fun night out around the Boat Quay area, hit up My Little Spanish Place for its lively atmosphere and reliably good tapas. Kick off the revelry with a jar of sangria to share. Besides the standard white and red sangrias, there’s also a cava version which plays up the citrus elements marvellously.
The gambas al ajillo here is first-rate. The prawns are plump and fresh, and you’ll definitely want to call for extra bread to mop up every last bit of that intensely crustaceanflavoured garlic oil. Another reliable choice is the chorizo frito—delectable knobs of fried spicy Spanish sausage. It is straightforward but no less gratifying.
For something more substantial, the Secreto Iberico, accompanied by romesco sauce and housemade crisps, is a solid bet. Seared over high heat, this secret cut of Iberico pork—’secret’ because there is no exact consensus on where this choice cut comes from, it all depends on individual butchers—is ridged with just enough fat for a satisfying juiciness. Of course, no Spanish meal would be complete without paella. The arroz negro, or squid paella, brims with umami sweetness of the seafood broth and squid ink, and hits just the spot.
