A heritage institution in the food scene here, Long Beach needs little introduction. Its Dempsey branch, housed in former army barracks, is one of the seafood chainâs five outlets and offers all the signature dishes in a spacious, rustic environment.
Steamed in a fragrant, light sauce with minced garlic and vermicelli, succulent royal razor clams are finished with a wonderfully crunchy topping of fried garlic, making it a firm favourite. The famous chilli crab features meaty Canadian Dungeness crab cooked in a delicious spicy-sweet and eggy chilli gravy. Mop it up with fried mantou with which the dish is served.
The sea bass cooked Penang-style is a must. Steamed and served with a slightly spicy, tangy sauce, the fish is juicy, flaky, and flavoursome. The golden stripe live lobster is also excellent, topped with fabulously tasty crisp egg threads and accented by curry leaves and chilli.
For dessert, the durian pudding and mango sago is enjoyable, and served dramatically on a beaker with misty dry ice. Another worthy option is the snow gland with almond paste and coconut ice cream served in a coconut shell.
