Café Iguana

Set along the Singapore River, Café Iguana is a great perch from which to watch the rollicking night scene across the river at Clarke Quay while enjoying a hearty Mexican meal. The meal begins long before you place your orders, with complimentary bowls of tortilla chips with salsa set down almost as soon as you take your seat.

The Mexican fare here lends itself well to sharing, so come with friends and load up on tacos, fajitas and chimichangas, each available in meat and seafood options. Start with the lipsmacking camarones al diablo, fresh succulent prawns sauteed with fiery chile and served with cheese and poblano chile quesadillas. The steak fajitas are a popular choice too, with tender hunks of meat on a bed of sautéed onions. Served on a sizzlinghot plate, it is accompanied by sour cream, guacamole, salsa and toasty tortillas. Alternatively, try the so-called 1/2 chicken that’s marinated with lime and finished with a tequila glaze. It deserves special mention for its exquisite tenderness and delicious smoky tang. End the night with banana chimichangas, ripened banana enrobed in fried tortilla and served with a generous scoop of avocado ice cream.

Naturally, margarita lovers have plenty to revel in here, especially at happy hour. The café promises that “all margaritas contain a full, honest-to-goodness 45ml of tequila, and can be made either frozen or on the rocks”. When in doubt, go for the Cadillac margarita made with top shelf tequila. If you’re here with the brood, check out the children’s selection of non-alcoholic margaritas to make them feel like they are part of the grown-up party.
