Antoinette

As its name suggests, this café by award-winning chef Pang Kok Keong’s pays homage to Marie Antoinette, the last queen of France, and accordingly, the setting is suitably plush, with thick carpet and deep armchairs you can sink into.

Foodwise, Antoinette serves up an enticing selection of savoury and sweet delights. Start with the classic French onion soup chockfull of caramelised onions and capped by a slice of country bread blanketed with melted Gruyere. The homemade pappardelle pasta with crabmeat and white wine tomato sauce is immensely satisfying, flecked with chillies and suffused with the briny goodness of fresh clams. Those in the mood for meat would do well with the boeuf bourguignon. Wagyu brisket is braised till spoon-tender and lacquered with a reduction of the red wine sauce it was cooked in.

As Marie Antoinette would have done, save plenty of space for dessert. You can’t go wrong with The Chocolicieux, a sweet crepe served with warm chocolate sauce, 66 per cent dark chocolate ice cream, chocolate pieces and vanilla crème Chantilly. For somethingmore refreshing, try the Chloe, a light sponge cake filled with yuzu cremeux and white chocolate vanilla mousse, and set on a crisp almond sable.
