Sumire first opened in Tokyo in 2009 and now boasts over 80 outlets in Japan, with outposts in Singapore and China.
Its yakitori menu is extensive. When unsure what to order,go for the Sumire yakitori platter comprising chicken heart, liver and thigh, chicken with leek, tomato bacon and pork belly. Great for sharing, diners can pick either the eight- or 12-skewer option.
Some of the must-tries here include the tsukune (chicken meatballs) and the hinatoro chicken shoulder. The former is juicy and flavourful, with a nice mouthfeel, while the latter is succulent and smoky. It is an interesting item to try as it is rarely found in restaurants here.
While yakitori is the highlight, there are other brilliantly executed dishes like the wagyu aburi-sukiyaki, aburi salmon mentai mayo roll and the bakudan korokke aka potato croquette. A crowd favourite, the latter comprises fluffy mashed potatoes coddling an oozy half-boiled egg beneath a crisp crust.
For dessert, opt for the homemade tofu cheese pudding, available in three flavours: mixed nuts, yuzu and original.
Wash it all down with some sake, beer or umeshutherestaurant offers a good list of alcoholic drinks that will leave you spoilt for choice.
