    Tucked away on the third level of Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel, Wan Hao Chinese Restaurant makes for a welcome respite from the Orchard Road bustle with its ornate setting modelled after a Chinese scholar’s house, complete with calligraphy on the walls and a bold palette of black and gold.

    As befits its elaborate surrounds, Wan Hao Chinese Restaurant purveys an elegant menu of Cantonese classics built on premium ingredients. Think Spanish Iberico pork char siew laced with luscious fat, stewed bird’s nest with egg white and crabmeat in a rich broth and a top-shelf selection of abalone and live seafood such as Alaskan king crab and Australian lobster.

    While all of the restaurant’s signatures are well worth a savour, we are especially partial to some. Try the stir-fried grouper fillet lightly swathed in a delicate, aromatic white pepper sauce and the pork ribs slicked with sweetish mandarin orange sauce. The latter comes in a very sizeable portion that hits the spot with tender juicy meat flecked with crunchy charred bits of caramelised goodness. Another sound bet is the wok-fried beef tenderloin and shiitake mushroom in a rich, flavourful black garlic sauce.

    Save some space for sweet treats such as the signature chilled coconut pudding paired with a rather unusual but very delicious purple glutinous rice purée, and the excellent deep-fried crispy pancake brimming with sweet red bean paste.
