Tucked neatly along the row of trendy restaurants and pubs at Nankin Row, the cosy Koji Sushi Bar is small enough that you will find yourself huddled among other patrons as you enjoy your meal. At this no-frills eatery, the omakase menu is highly recommended at dinner, as it offers great value for money. (Fans will be pleased to know that it has recently opened a second branch at Chevron House in Raffles Place.) The meal begins with the likes of miso-infused tofu topped with finely shredded golden eye snapper, and follows with a chilled trio of marinated baby sardines, yellow herring roe over cucumber and a diced Japanese momotaro tomato. These are balanced with a scrumptious dish of uni layered in jelly with edamame and water lily bulbs, before fresh curls of sashimi, including tuna belly, yellowtail, sweet prawns and swordfish, tantalise the palate.
To warm bellies, there is a mouth-watering grilled hamachi (yellowtail) cheek glazed in teriyaki sauce, and salted wagyu beef with air-dried garlic chips that just melts on the tongue. The sushi course is served one morsel at a time, with a mix of nigiri (raw) and aburi (torched) sushi. The meal is brought to close with a simple miso clam soup and a slice sweet fruit imported from Japan.
Sake drinkers can turn to the blackboard of sake and shochu selections, each of which is listed with its gravity score. At lunchtime, an a la carte menu purveys favourites such as mixed-grain chirashi don and sushi sets, as well as a good selection of Japanese snacks that go great with beer.
